Halo MMO was making rapid progress
Ensemble reveal status of now axed title
According to Ensemble's technology chief Dave Pottinger, the firm's now axed Halo MMO project was fully authorised and had forty developers working on it, when Microsoft opted to pull the plug. The platform holder went on to close down Ensemble entirely, the studio set to shut following the release of RTS Halo Wars.
Talking about the defunct online title, Pottinger told ShackNews it "was in production for a long time. The Halo IP was a great IP to launch an MMO with. Microsoft… hasn’t had the best track record with those."
He continued: "And we worked on it for a long time–we had staffed up an almost-40 person team. And then there was some reorganization at Microsoft, and the new bosses thought it wasn’t the best idea anymore. It had actually been green-lit, and then it got cancelled after that."
Apparently, World of Warcraft was one of the game's main inspirations, while a lot of the MMO's content was actually moved over to Halo Wars following the project's cancellation.
The title would have been an action-focussed MMO, but was certainly not a first-person shooter, we hear. More from Ensemble soon.
